We have a couple dozen rose bushes in our yard, and as winter faded they became infested with aphids. I went down to Gray's Garden Center and came home with a cast of thousands. (See the first photo is the Middle-Fork Ladybugs Archive.) In all honesty, I was more interested in taking pictures than getting rid of the aphids, and so I sought out the best lit most populous spots and dumped a few hundred ladybugs right on top of them. This is not the recommended procedure for efficacy in aphid elimination.

The fig tree was also infested, and provided the big green background for this picture.

KSR Kingworth has been so kind as to post this picture with a credit Lady Bugs do a lot of Good at her blog, which appears to be only named visually. Very cool.

NEWSLANG and Our Maple Tree

This has been a good year for pictures of the Sugar Maple in our front yard. I've been home during all parts of the day, and the rain and wind didn't leave the tree shorn of glory. Last year the tree was totally red for a few busy days, and then the rain laid it bare.

Miles and de Kooning in the Afterworld

Miles is using my picture of de Kooning in Afterworld as wallpaper on his MySpace Profile. It's kinda awful - doesn't work worth beans as a background, but what the heck, I like my picture enough to make a big mess of chili.

The picture is a photograph of a shallow creek running across bedrock, viewed through a template created from a drawing. The white is the paper the drawing was on. I like this technique a lot, and have been edging back into more work like this.

Nick and the Tidal Patterns

This is a new hotlink. I don't get down to the beach very often - the mountains are closer and far more interesting to me. We met a bunch of friends from across the country for a couple of days, staying at right on the beach at Driftwood Shores, very nice, although their breakfast food is pretty slack for Lane County's Only Beach Resort.

We arrived early, and tramped around in the blowing sand looking for pictures. The blowing sand is disturbing when I am carrying a camera around, and the bondage relationship with my hat gets old, but I had a blast. All of the pictures in the Beach archive were taken that day.

Nick is using it as the wallpaer on his MySpace profile. This kind of works, I don't know. It's mildly effective in this setting, but it makes his pale green text difficult to read. But I'm very happy to see it.

I love this picture! This was one of the first times I tried cutting the background away and setting it black - this really accentuates the colors and shapes that inspired the photograph. Since then, I have done this to most of the flower pictures. (You can see more examples in the Flowers 2007 archive.)

@ssassin, a self-described cherry popping lassie, has left these tulips as a comment to Savvy J on his myspace profile.
This picture appears somewhere on * Sol *'s profile as well. It is set private. It also appeared briefly in private email.

Here Comes the Rain Again, Resourced, Renamed, Recolored and Cropped

This picture was originally hotlinked, and now the image has been stolen, cropped, and had its colors changed. Owell - at least they left mine on long enough for me to make note.

It's at a French forum named Parlons de nos parties jdr and sits mostly obscured in the background. The green coloring looks like tornado weather - how often are there tornadoes in France?

Well, anyway, it's a stolen image, but I just want to document its use - I don't like playing cop for people who need to play thief. You silly people, just ask! and you shall receive.

The Orange Dragonfly Alights in Russia

This forum is in Cyrillic, which I can't read, and neither can babelfish. My dragonfly shares a post by stardoc with a few other dragonflies, but they pale in comparison with the wonderful photoshopped animals above and below it. Check it out, they're way cool.

I took this picture in my back yard. I got greedy and touched the tree and off it flew. I do that too much. Owell. The weather is warming and the insects are starting to show - hopefully I'll see one of these again soon.

This is cool: Middle-Fork has been stumbledupon. I don't understand this yet.

Traffic for the December 2006 Middle-Fork archive took a big jump today, from people actually coming in from the index and fetching all the images. (More usual is an archive being fetched as a result of being the source of an image search hit.)

The Residents and DisAppointment Daughter Are Seeing Eye to Eye

the Residents are great, and have been creating cool stuff for decades (Residents Wikipedia page.) Now they have moved online, into the "Storyteller Era" - 2006-present.

The Residents use a cool eyeball head tux wearing visible riff as a theme, and in a comment DisAppointment Daughter has left my collage Seeing Eye to Eye.

DisAppointement Daughter posted this hotlink at 2304 10 Apr and since then there have been 245 hits. Hits will probably keep up the rest of today and then taper off when the comment leaves the front page.

This is an odd situation. I found an access of one of my pictures of a syrfid fly with this referrer: http://www.ghettodriveby.com/beelike/.

ghettodriveby is an image search engine that returns a single image for a keyword. This is the only one of my pictures which has been accessed this way.

I plugged in some keywords I thought might be unique to my work, and eventually plugged in Staley Creek and bingo! this picture showed up. I was pleased.

Then I looked at the image url:

(UPDATE MOMENTS LATER: While I was composing this post, ghettodriveby changed and is now sourcing the image from its original location. The photobucket image url still resolves.)

This is my image, renamed by adding most of my nom de ars to the filename, and served from photobucket. I don't know if I like this or not.

I have created an account, and asked support how to see the context of this image, for all I know, the person is saying what a great photographer I am and listing my blog. They tell me there is no way to get in touch with another account holder. I must complain to discover, and so I have. Yuck.

Since google scarfed up blogger google image searches are finding images on Far Cartouche, and often an image original to Middle-Fork is sourced from this blog after I have posted about it as a hotlink.

I guess I like that, I'm certainly seeing an increase in visits at all three blogs. Even at Days Between Stations, which can't figure out what the heck its mission is, resulting in much inactivity.

$girl has placed Flowers for Francis Bacon on her myspace page under Who I'd Like To Meet. Francis Bacon rocks, he was a truly great painter. (Ack! the link to his collected works is stale!) I wonder is $girl just likes my picture, or if she really wants to meet Francis.

Steeple Rock and the Storm of Hotlinks Coming In

This picture has started picking up hotlinks lately. It has had one going pretty much since the original post back in August 2005.

Now the top score is held by a soccer forum in a cheer for The Purple Storm.

In second place is Schnegggel1990s HP homepage. The picture seems out of place to me, not hardly tough enough for the company.

Our Maple Tree and the Price of Oil

This is an odd hotlink. I've been ignoring it by mistake, confusing it with two other maple tree pictures. This picture has two hotlinks and I see I need to make additions to the search engine filtering.

The big hotlink is at Price of Oil. This looks like an astroturf site, but I don't see what it's up to. It caught my attention in particular because my proud Oregonian Maple Tree is described as endangered in Vermont. The comments on this blog take you to a suggestion that your email will be warmly welcomed. It seems weird not to have comments.

Owell, I think I'll watch it for awhile, and maybe I can figure out why this website seems so weird.

Injured Spider at a Korean Spider Party

There are a bunch of very cool spider pictures on a bbs at djuna.cine21.com, one of which is my injured flower spider, poor critter, a speck of life now long gone, with the dubious consolation prize of immortality on the net. I took this in my backyard last year.

The site is Hangul, the Korean script. The page chokes babelfish, but the text under my picture translates as:

Space Invader at Space Invader

Space Invader is an eponymously entitled Italian site dedicated to that grand old arcade game Space Invaders. I was never much of a fan. At one job once upon a time several of us went in on a $100 Berzerk. It ended up in my office - I ended up being ungodly excellent at downing white-ning bright robots.

This picture is my nephew, a polaroid taken maybe 20 years ago.

Space Invader gives credit for the image, very cool. This places them in the rarified company of Blogisattvas.

These New Puritans and the Boiling Water

This Boiling Water is lurking behind the realm link in the February 07, 2007 post. These New Puritans are a band in England somewhere. The downloads are empty links, but I like the art work.

This picture was recently hotlinked at a commercial site, hawking health nostrums and therapies. The boiling water illustrated a Hydrotherapy section. Scald that ugly skin away! I confess to having swapped the link for afew days, having no confidence or desire to talk to a sales site chalk full of hot linked pictures. I put a pictures of
10 Rovegs in it's place:

The commericial hotlink dispappeared a few days later, replaced by a very pretty picture of some waterfalls, and I replaced the boiling water picture.

I don't like doing this - if this picture had had active hotlinks of which I approve (pretty much any use that isn't commercial, or radically alters the image) I would have been in a quandary.

The proper way to deal with this is in the webserver, and I haven't set things up to make this easy. If this is a trend, then I may have to.

I read in a sysadmin email list yesterday that email spam now constitutes 90-95% of net traffic. This admin was seeing 98-99% at their institution. Yikes. Dark matter and introns.

An Orange Rose at Happy Heather's Hullaballoo

Happy Heather is using this orange rose at the very tip top of her blog's sidebar, where it looks very nice indeed. Her blog is called Happy Heather's Hullaballoo The funnest place on earth. This is about as top billing as hotlinks ever achieve!

This is a view of Diamond Peak from somewhere on Bunchgrass Ridge. Someone, an admin of the group, is using it as an illustration of Rain Ridge, which is *Under construction*, and looks to be a roleplaying forum.

I'm building a 36 Views of Diamond Peak, and an inordinate number of them are from Bunchgrass Ridge. There's a trail that runs along it from the west end of Oakridge to Waldo Lake. The Disciples of Dirt have done a lot of work with this trail.

This is a rarity, and I can't see it. There have been very few to no hotlinks to Far Cartouche. This collage ended up around town on bulletin boards and in the post as mail art. I was just deciding to start working completely w/ black and white so as not to be intoxicated by colors that don't xerox well.

MySpace Pilgrim Rachel and the Ladybugs and Aphids

Each time you login, you see the new posts. bloglines relies on cookies for session information, and all these hotlinks tell me is that one, and maybe two or three, people have Middle-Fork in their list.

The hotlinking patterns have changed a bit. Popular pictures are very popular. I written some scripts to scrap the hotlinking addresses from the access log, and create most of a post with them, but it's a bit clunky and I haven't had the time. I'm going to try and catch up again.

Those sinuous curves are striking similar, little did I know... I had discovered the fossilized remains of Hecatonchires, who were the head honchos here on the mortal plane, back in the Paleoarchean era, before the Italians came along and figured out how to boil pasta, instead of just flinging it into the fire.

Michael San Diego and Loony Tune Lake

This was taken in the Timpanogas basin. I had visited Amos and Andy Lakes, and was making a loop back downhill to the campground. The Middle Fork Willamette rises in this basin, I like to think it flows from June Lake, and then meanders past June Mountain as it flows into civilization. Others probably think Indigo Lake is the source.

Michael San Diego is using it as a tiled backgorund on his Friendster page, and it works very well indeed.

I have my very own Mechanical Turk helping me figure out what pictures work well as tiles. I need to check out Google Image's new Image Labeler.

We have a wonderful sugar maple tree in the front yard, and last year conditions were perfect for a full blown orange and red tree. A picture I took 3 years ago was the number one hotlink for over a year, and now this picture has taken over.

Dark Angel and THE V Pilgrim

Arches National Park is a truly wonderful place, and the hike to to Dark Angel is a beauty. It's also very crowded, for the park is Freeway Close and has many excellent easy and easily accessed trails. Getting off the trail is difficult, in that the ground is covered with cryptogamic soil that you really don't want to walk on. It's better to go somewhere else if you're looking for the true backcountry experience.

This shot is from some rolls of ASA 1600 Kodacolor. The camera was all shut down and I was getting shutter speeds of 1/1000th and the ilk. I've never been able to get this cool grainy look again; it may be that like so many other rolls of film whose chemistry evolved after they sat for months in inclement conditions.

I like this picture because Dark Angel is indeed dark. In most the other pictures of dark Angel I see Dark Angel is all lit up.

THE V has posted it in a thread at Planet Think Tanks commenting on Dark Angel (SA)'s name.

I took this picture from the northern trailhead of the Bristow Prairie Trail. Steeple Rock is that wee point on the little peak to the extreme right of the picture. Here's what it looks like up close.

Today it popped up at two different urls simultaneously: at Harmony Central and at ebassist dot com. basshunter has chosen it, saying 'Like, wow man, it's the Thursday edition of Basshunter's "Relaxing Picture of the Day!!"'

Pilgrim Vacation214 at Panicfreaks with the Show of Hands

I had a lot a fun with polaroids way back when, but nowadays, a dollar a shot is mind boggling, especially considering that I bring home five or six hundred essentially free exposures everytime I head out into the forest. In addition, they seem very much like polaroids, quickly convertable to raw material for further creations.

Bu oboy they were fun at the time! I took a few dozern hand pictures to create this collage. The black background is a blank book. I use them for my journals.

...and this is odd. I registered at panicfeask.org to see the forum in which the Show of Hands appeared, and usually that is sufficient to then go look at people's profiles. I see now that I registered at the sandbox, and Vacation214's profile is at the vBulletin forum, at the same domain. I need to scoot out into the forest to catch the light right around noon, so I don't have time to properly link up this post. I'll do that tomorrow.

Usually these little critters show up as illustrations of bad dates or some as some friendly teasing by those with privileges. But who knows? No one that's not an acknowledged friend of PATTY, who claims to be Female, 16 years old, LAOS, WASHINGTON, United States.

I built some posters about seeing Cambodia in your backyard, oh, once upon a time. I know Stonehedge is really in Washington, not way across the turf and pond - so why not Laos?

I bet it would fit. Its too early to go fetch statistics.

Upper Trestle Creek Falls and the Mysterious MySpace Pilgrim

Trestle Creek has some very nice falls, and these days some very nice trails that lead to them. I found them on a map, after walking by where Trestle flows into Bryce Creek numerous times. There was no trail. One day a friend and I decided to walk up the creekbed to the falls, but upon arriving, we found a brand new trail.

Years later, I paced the development of the trail to the upper falls, every other week going out and seeing how far it had gotten. They did a great job, and gave me the opportunity to take the shot above.

It is hotlinked at a mysterious place, blocked behind a privacy shield. Alas.

Shitake Rose and Leslie MySpace Pilgrim

Leslie has chosen this picture for her background. This is cool, I really like how the picture works as a repeated tile.

A friend brought me a box of shitake mushrooms he had picked, and I grinned twice over: they're so delicious! ...and I knew I had found the perfect background for the most beautiful dried rose I have ever managed to create. I found the rose on a walk near work, and then placed it on one of the myriad monitors clogging up my office. Monitors are great flower driers, at least the tube monitors. I haven't tried this with a flat screen yet.

This is a great display of my picture - I love it. The picture makes me smile everytime I see it.

Bring Your Popcorn and the Little Tree at Grasshopper Point

This little tree lives in an alpine meadow near Grasshopper Point. If you like alpine meadows, this is a great hike: from Grasshopper Mountain over to Chucksney Mountain stretch 3 or 4 of miles of meadows, with some cool rocky ridges connecting them. It's an old trail, and near the middle is a very funny section of trail. It's run straight down a gentle slope, and is over 6 feet deep in places.

There isn't much shade over the first mile of the trail, walking up to the ridgeline, so I like to go on cloudy days. Days like this one are great for capturing photos reminiscent of Chinese ink painting.

I post a picture of a tree on Christmas Day, and this was the 2005 photo.

Arwen Galen has posted it in a comment at a Double Exposure Community Forum. The forum is subclassed and ends up being called Bring your popcorn!

Maidstone Pilgrim and the Unsettled Weather at Snag Boat Bottom Bend

Snag Boat Bottom Bend is a relatively new part of the William L. Finley National Wildlife Reserve, detached from the main area and located off Peoria Road just south of Peoria, Oregon. Peoria was an early metropolis, back when the Willamette River was the major travel route. It lost importance when the railroads, and then the highways took over. I spent a lot of time at SBBB for a couple years, driving by it twice a day on my commute. Its parking lot sits in the sun, so it is kind of nasty this time of year, but there is a field of young trees which will provide shade in a few years.

It's a great place to catch cool clouds, sitting out in the middle of the valley with long perspectives in every direction. This picture went up today at Weather for Maidstone as an illustration for unsettled weather "rumbling away in parts of southeast England, East Anglia and southern England." I'm very happy to see it hotlinked, this is a fun picture.

I have mixed feelings about this picture. There are a lot of elements I like: the overall composition, most of the glissening waterdrops, and the fire patterns on the inside of a petal. But overall, the more fuzzy parts on the bottom right draw too much of my attention. Owell, I do like it.

I was at the top of Skinner's Butte watching and photographing the Mighty Cloud Over Eugene as it morphed in the winds, and at the very top briefly ducked into the woods. (Me, that is, not the Mighty Cloud.) There was a single beam of light, and the waterdrop sat at center stage. Wowsers!

Hungarian Pilgrim tyra89 irta, 4-In-1 Cone and the Lights In The Forest

Here's another triple header, with two old veterans and one neophyte hotlink. The picture above was taken just past the spur up the cinder cones of Four-In-One Cone, looking north at Mt. Jefferson. Mt. Washington is closer, but hidden behind Four-In-One. This is a picture looking south from Four-In-One Cone, looking down at where the above pictyre was taken.

It's a great hike, busy like all the trails which start on the Old Highway 242. It tees into the Pacific Crest Trail after 5.5 miles.

This picture, and the two pictures which follow, have been hotlinked into a forum in Hungary. There are a lot of English lyrics, other than that I'm clueless.

The Light in the Forest pictures as a category are my most popular hotlinks. The first one has probably edged into the double digits now, but the second has only shown up a couple times, once when I let HTV go quiet, and once when it disappeared before I could blog it. I'm glad to see it again, so I can show it off again.

Robin's and Noah Saved Again! by MySpace Pilgrim chopped liver ?

Here's another one from Far Cartouche. chopped liver ? has hotlinked the very first picture of Robin's and Noah. They were in shock for a few weeks, what with me wielding the laser like photoshop tools on their fragile body parts, and then thrusting them into horrible situations. Or at least, into strange ones. They did okay for a while, then the box died and life has never been the same.

These two kitties served as announcement mascots for my participation in the various Friday Cat Blogging Carnivals, primarily the Modulator and the Carnival of the Cats. The kitties are Puppie's, probably the ones in the birthing picture. I selected them out of the kitchen, andin this instance, placed them against a color tweaked sky. Each week I would figure out something new I could do with photoshop.

Then I got a fulltime job, and my partner went off to care for parents, and it's going to take me some doing to track these critters down again.

This critter was just hanging around. I couldn't see any obvious damage, but it wasn't flying, and didn't really want to move much. I wonder now if it was all jammed up w/ spider web. It was nice to get a picture of a bee from "below" like this, back, side, and face shots being so easy to achieve.

Myspace Pilgrim Law and the Mighty Cloud

This is a cool one. I tracked that cloud for a few hours across the southern Willamette Valley last year after work. This picture was earlier, and a few miles to the northwest, looking southeast. Later, after I had finished my walk, and was driving zig zag south and east watching the cloud change from perspective and winds, stopped and took this picture looking due east.

LAW is using it as a tiled wallpaer on his myspace page. I like this one, too, just like Dzeina's use of the wild roses picture. This looks good.

Myspace Marius and the Rainbow Clearcut

This was taken in Paddy's Valley, at the Douglas County trailhead on 2153. It's the road you get to by taking 21 all the way to the end, and then keep going. The little spur that the trailhead is on isn't on the map, but there is a string of text right there, across from the road that runs up the hill to the northwest. There's a big pile of debris sitting in a clearing (the little white splotch on the map) and the trail parking is on top. It's shadeless, dirty gravel on boulders, and generally not the coolest place in the forest to hang out.

However, the view is superb, and I took advantage of the drizzly overcast to hang out here after hiking. It was partly sunny, party rainy, and the rainbows were popping up every few minutes, blazing for a moment, and then gone again. I sat reading, looking up when the drizzle came, and managed to snag one.

Marius has hotlinked it onto his myspace general information, where it looks very cool with the strange map in the background. I keep looking for Main Stage, and Whitebird.

Unicorn Dream Attack Pilgrim and the Eastern Sky at Sunset

This picture was taken on the Woodpecker Loop Trail at William L. Finley Wildlife Reserve. I was walking the loop in a clockwise direction, and this picture was taken at the crest of the hill just before reaching the lookout playform. I came very close to not taking it, it really seemed marginal at the time.

I took the picture, and now Unicorn Dream Attack has hotlinked it into a message to m83. This has doubled the unique site hit rate at Middle-Fork (with the help of Dzeina Pilgrim and Our Wild Roses.) These two have taken over the top spot for most requested url from cgi-bin and /. That's quite an achievement, beating out the slow motion dance the spammers I and do twirling on the .cgis.

Don't be moving to the southern Willamette Valley, because it is a one of the largest producers of grass seed in the world. I spent a few years commuting across the valley, and I can testify that the beauty of endlessly green fields is matched by the endlessly aggressive by products of growing them. Dogen Digger, a Highly Sensitive Pilgrim, annd Our Digger Pine

I love this tree. I'd never seen one until shortly before I became contractually connected with this individual. I was leaning into the center of the tree looking straight up when I took this picture. These trees branch very close to the ground, and produce quite a few serpentine vertical branches. I don't have a good picture of it - you can see the most in the background of this picture of our maple tree, but it doesn't give a good sense of the overall structure.

Big trees are very difficult to capture, and I find that when I manage a good one, like this picture of a douglas fir, the only people who appreciate the shot are other forestheads.

Dzeina Pilgrim All Entangled In Our Wild Roses

Here's a nice use for this image. Dzeina has used it for a background. Generally, I don't like the effect of tiling: it throws off the composition, creates odd color combinations, and tends to add jagged ends all jutting around. This one is cool, though: the viney nature of the roses and the large content area down the center hides the edges and makes it feel more like one large image, or something from an illustrated manuscript.

This makes me realise I should start experimenting with compositions, thinking of them more as parts of something larger, and not just islands of themselves.

This page is .lv, which is Latvia. The wikipedia article saysthe languiage is Latvian, to which the closest I can get in babelfish is Russian, with which I am able to fetch server error 157. Perhaps that is the Godel encoding for the page in question.

Myspace Wilhelm is Dead! Pilgrim and the Maple Tree Rainbow Sunset

This time the Myspace page is open to the general public in that it doesn't require you to login. Wilhelm is Dead! is using the picture above as a background tile. The colors are real, amazingly enough. The maple tree was in full fall glory, and there had been spotty rain all day. Add in Eugene's in-your-face red and orange sunsets and oboy! It was pretty cool out right then.

I'd never thought about it, but all three elements are symbols of ending: rainbow ends the rain, sunset ends the day, and fall ends the living year.
I felt kind of goofy at the time, the world was covered in orange marmalade.

It's definitely past time to catch up with the... hmm, is there a group noun for pilgrims? A Mayflower of Pilgrims. A Crusade of Pilgrims. Those seem a bit too organized for this crew (mob? riot?) of New Age Pilgrims. A Stew-of-Too-Many-Cooks of Pilgrims - a bit grim. What was that some one was saying about Vollmann being Anarchy breeds Fascism, and Pynchon (New Novel In December!!) is Anarchy breeds Party! This is a literary version of Leary and the Bus. I vote for the Bus. Hey! Now we can dig up Zappa and Kesey both! Can you imagine? Zappa/Kesey. That's the ticket!

A Postmodernovel of Pilgrims! Let's go with that. And appropriately enough, kapea is hotlinking a self-documenting collage from Far Cartouche. I think this is the first FC hotlink. I get a lot of hits for the Pride and Prejudice drawing, but that's pretty much it.

There was a thriving xerox art scene in Eugene in the late 70s and early 80s. The Pat Fish document dates from that time. You could wander around town and there would be cool collage art on all the bulletin boards. It's nice to see this one getting some eyeballs. It's that time of year, and the-lorax88 was one history test away from being done with school! I saw the hotlink show up at Ari's Friends, which I guess is an aggregated group blog. No doubt, there's an Evelyn the Modified Blog out there by now (checks) hmmm. I'm surprised, is everyone out digging him up to run for president next time? Hey, big opportunity, here. Arf!

All that aside, Congratulations to the-lorax88 for being done with school! And to illustrate the triumph, the-lorax88 has chosen one of my picture of Hendricks Park. I seldom visit this ridgetop park, but that day something dragged me up there. Thanksgiving was close, and I didn't have any wild turkey pictures. I arrived in the park thrilled by the misty sunbeams, and walked right up to a rafter!

The Thanksgiving Picture is nice, but I really prefer the one shown above, and this one.

Thank you the-lorax88! for displaying my picture, and prompting me to realise it's about time I did a better job of organizing Middle-Fork. There are over 600 pictures, now, and it took me a while to find the turkeys.

The Running Men and the Gopher Snake

I photographed this snake at the trailhead of the Woodpecker Loop Trail at the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge, but it really gets around. The Running Men went out into the (what passes for) wilderness (in the San Francisco Bay Area) and stumbled upon many unusual things, including a snake. It could have been a gopher snake, also known as a bull snake. Its main habitat is in the southeast deserts, but it lives in the foothills on the coast as well. Finley is similar to the hills around the SF Bay, rolling hills and grasslands with deciduous copses scattered about.

Leaves Falling on Rainer Rilke Maria

Here's another crushed up hotlink, this time hailing from Harry and the poetry, and uses this picture to illustrate a poem by Rainer Rilke Maria. I ran the page through Babelfish to see what exactly I have the honor of illustrating. This is a translation from German to Italian, and then to English. The first probably done by someone with an ear for both languages and an affinity for the poet. The second one is a machine translation:

The picture is rather severely crushed, but illustrating a cool poem that set me pondering awhile is ample compensation.

The dark-side of Our Maple Tree

Something has happened in Thailand in regards to access to my pictures on google images. Here is another hotlink, this one at dark-side's diary at my.dek-d.com. The poor maple tree has been squashed thinner, it looks painful to me, but I look at the model everyday. Perhaps this helps it to a better fit with the other pictures - I suspect instead the proverbial view of technology as covering your eyes and poking a sharp stick into a dark room.

This is a new one, rather, it is unusual for Middle-Fork, every since I tried to figure out into which of the three giant Sani-Pac bins I should place all the stolen souls, maybe the biggest one, since "if it grows it goes" but does a stolen soul ever grow? I finesse this conundrum by not pointing my camera at people. Or at least only grudgingly doing anything with such a picture when I succumb.

Dark Angel and the Mysterious Pilgrim

Here's a curious one, showing off a picture I like a lot. I was shooting with ridiculously high ASA film, kodacolor 1600, in the bright desert sunlight. The pictures came out with this cool handcolored 1930s (sometime) National Geographics look. There's this fierce grain, yet the details in the foliage work very well. This is a great picture, I'm really happy it's getting hotlinked. I checked google images for dark angel utah and my pictures win and place! Yowzah! I have another picture of Dark Angel I like, from much closer, more in your face. It'll show up eventually.

And doing the honors, a site I thought was Chinese, then, um, Japanese? doesn't translate at all through babelfish, except for a partially mangled title.

Gumby vs. the Tank Man!

This is so exciting!

For some reason, I've been getting a lot of google images search hits for Tank Man, the great fellow who stood in front of the tanks 17 years ago at Tiananmen Square. This is the only picture on Middle-Fork which is not mine. A colleague set up the blog on his systems, and one day walked into my office and told me to try posting. This is the only picture I had on my box, and so up it went.

Since the beginning, the picture of Tinker and Gumby has led the charts, image most frequently accessed through image search engines.

Today Tank Man is vigorously contesting Gumby's supremacy! It's been neck and neck for an hour now - a search for Tank man! A search for Gumby! Yikes!

A Enlightened (?) LiVEJOURNAL View of a Syrphid Fly on a Purple Crocus

I love this picture, it really turned out well. These crocuses were the very last flowers to appear this year in the yard. I've always thought of them as harbingers of Spring, but they have done double duty. The syrphid fly hung around for a day, and I haven't seen it since.

An access for this picture showed up yesterday from a thread in Misanthropist's Journal. It's a place where anyone can reply, I didn't need to register.

They're playing a game with these rules:

princessa125 searched for fork and here's the current results page. Two of my pictures are on the first page, neither one of them a picture of a fork. The spiders are picking up the name of the blog Middle-Fork. I like the serendipity, but it suggests that there is a lot of room for improving the situational semantics of the search strings. Blog titles are like band names, you can maybe assume that Lawnmower Puppies will be more radical than Winter Elk, but even that much is iffy.

Anyway, I replied to _itsjustme_ and princessa125:

My photoblog is named Middle-Fork (http://www.middle-fork.org/). I get a lot of hits from the image search engines for fork, usually with some other word, like "robot fork". Who searches for pictures of robot forks? I had placed the urls and associated text in hyperlink tags, and the LiVEJOURNAL interface disassembled them and displayed the constituent parts. LiVEJOURNAL enforces enlightenment! Is that cool or what? Probably or what, I'm not sure what I think yet. If you simply type in the url, the interface makes it a link and displayed the url as the link text.

In the rules I find:

This runs completely against my own rules, but if I don't say this, I'm giving MS permission to abscond with my image:

An Enlightened Outdoors Pro

OutdoorsPro is a cool blog. Mark S. Nelson is "a 40-year old Alaskan rafting, hiking and glacier guide and Oregon Pro Ski Patroller" who works at, um, one of those Skiing meccas in the Oregon Cascades. Willamette Pass? Bachelor? I just searched for job, new job, work and hired on his blog and came up with nothing. The About the OutdoorsPro link leads me to a page that claims he is "currently spending the winter far away from the snow in the Deep, Deep South" but I'm pretty sure he's just down the road in the ice and snow. One of the first posts I read was about his new job. Maybe it's that Ashland ski resort? Or, perhaps he means he's far from "the snow in the Deep, Deep South" - far from the snow in Antartica.

Forget all that, and go read a bunch of his work related posts, they're great, full of detail about his day, hiking up to the cone to get in shape for avalanche patrol, becoming encrusted with rime on the lift, participating in injury rescue drills, marveling at the wind gauge that pegged while he was safely ensconced below. And more and more! I love it.

OutdoorsPro is cool, especially as I'll never get anywhere near these locales while he is loving his job - I hate snow. But I love the idea of enjoying the cold, and peeking in remotely on a guided tour by an expert is great.

I'm pretty sure he's near Oakridge.

He was so gracious as to mention Middle-Fork in a 27 Dec 2005 post.

And, just for the love of the cold, read Independent People by Halldor Laxness. An Icelander, he won the Nobel Prize, and this is the best of his novels (that I've read.) It's COLD in Iceland in the winter. There's a scene where the protagonist is out in a blizzard and plunges into a thundering river, then goes home and... well. Read it, it's great, and brrrrrrr very cold.

Bizarre Mailto Access

I've found some weird mailto accesses, I don't know what they are doing. There have been 11 of them since 16 Dec 2005, with 10 of them from 27-30 Dec 2005.

A mailto URL is not supposed to access the server, rather it should fire up your email client. Spiders should know not to try.

These all seem taken wholly from the mailto links, my own, and a handful of commenters. Here is an example, one with my address:

Snail's Tales - the Best Science Blog in the Universe

Snail's Tales is the best science blog I have found[1]. Aydin Örstan Effendi is a Research Associate in the Section of Mollusks at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA, U.S.A.

I discovered Snail's Tales by blog surfing via blogger's Next Blog button.

Snail's Tales displays true blogging nature, in that there regularly appear new and shiny tidbits, covering many aspects of what are clearly his natural inclinations as well as that of his profession: stories of field trips[2], descriptions of mullusk physiology and habitats, examinations of historical and current work, reflections on the culture of science, and more! And then there is an excellent seasoning consisting of reports on beer and food, pictures of grafitti on box cars and trees, articles about books, and, and more!

And all presented in an excellent voice: wise, humorous, and clearly exhibiting a love of the world and his work.

This is my idea of paradise. Why are there not more such science blogs? Snail's Tales can be read pleasurably by ignoramuses such as myself, and judging by the comments, by knowledgable professionals as well. He posts regularly; this is very important. Many science blogs read like they are grudging distractions, a chore and a bore, and this shows up in sporadic posts written in clunky jargon, posts that show no real awareness of audience. (Or so it seems to me, my apologies to those who are merely trying to grump at their colleagues in front of this big picture window we call the web.)

I tried to pick out some favorite posts, but it's impossible. It's all good. Go check him out, and get back regularly.

[1] I say this not because of his Blogasattva Nature - that gracious blessing appeared later - but due to the inherent superiority of its content and style.
[2] My favorites, by an edge. I love to wander around the landscape, and doing it remotely via proxy is wonderful.

A Chinese/Japanese (?) Pilgrim and Our Maple Tree

UPDATE 4: The trusted authority has begun to say "odd, a Chinese site with Japanese titles" and "the links [at the top] are Chinese usage." So... hmmm.

UPDATE 3: A trusted authority tells me this is Japanese text, and that many of the pictures are scenes of Japan. I added the Japanese to English, and have left the Chinese to English.

This hotlink is a bit intimidating. It's on a Chinese language forum, it's a long ways away, and it's on a page just jammed full of images.

UPDATE: This could be Japanese, I don't know. I thought the lack of kana indicated that it is Chinese, and below list some translations. I just ran the text through Babelfish Japanese to English, and the result makes about as much sense as that given below.

UPDATE 2: I've gotten one lukewarm assurance that this is Chinese. And, also, the domain name 'hklion.com' looks like Hong Kong, and sure enough, a whois search reveals it is registered in Hong Kong. That is hardly definitive, but it seems like a good clue.

Yahoo! Pilgrims and the Amtrak Rainbow

Yesterday I discovered the hotmail hotlinks; today I went looking for other web mail hotlinks,
and checked to see if there were any Yahoo! Mail
hotlinks. There are 30 mail.yahoo hits out of 343279 total entries.

This looks to be an inbox display, one that shows an initial snippet of each
letter. I have a yahoo account, but I'm stuffed to the brim and not very
ambitious at the moment. I'll be exploring the interfaces for the various
web mail over the next few weeks, but I really like this picture, and
wanted to show off something pretty today.

The Amtrak train is on the left, and the freight train is stationary on a side track.
I have a sequence of shots with the Amtrak train crossing the scene. This is the
only one in which the Amtrak is separate from the freight train.

Hotmail Pilgrims like Ships in the Night

I just stumbled on a world of hotlink that has somehow completely eluded my attention.
I glanced through the last few hours of the access log, and found the above image accessed from this URL:

Hotmail is a web mail service, the very first one. At first I though that the URL is what happens when an email with the hotlink to my picture is moved from one folder to another. But there is a direction=next on line 4. That may imply that this someone
is scrolling through the folder wherein the email with this hotlink occurs.

I get too much email, webmail is useless for me, and so I am ignorant.

I've been trying to create this kind of URL in the access log using my spanking
new hotmail account - no luck so far. I may have to go find a windows box
and try it there. Maybe Windows-to-Windows, how kinky.

There may be a user identification buried in the URL, but I have my doubts as
there's no good reason to put it there. Then again, this is MS, and I
learned a long time ago that I don't think the same way they do.

I expect these hotlinks are very deep dark black holes.

Among the 342021 lines in the access log there are 44 hits from hotmail
URLs. Four of them are from email I sent to the ranger at Finley NWR
seeking the identity of the gopher snake I found at Woodpecker Loop - it
references otherwise unpublished photos. The others? I'll post them all
here as I putz around at understanding hotmail.

Tinker and Gumby - Number One Attractive Pleasure

This photograph is very popular. People call up the altar of Google Images and place the icon "Gumby" in the offering tray. Soon they are rewarded with these visions of the Annointed One. I think people select mine because of its weird coloring (sunlight film shot under incandescent lights,) plus the ambiguous nature of the scene tickles their curiosity.

A glance at current webalizer stats reveals the secret habits of Gumby seekers. They almost always load the entire monthly archive as well, which makes me wonder if perhaps Gumby Worship is the Path to Very Fast Download Speeds.

No one is hotlinking to this picture.

I succumbed to temptation, and posted Gumby Takes A Hike, but to be honest, no one has seen him since. (Rumor mumbles something about the compost bin.)

This is cool, the BREAKING! MySpace hotlink started cooking today. The first IP showed up a few times, and then a different IP accessed it. So I logged in and checked it out.

Sabaki shows up on dynamite's blog. This is her profile page. The blog is inaccessible unless you're logged in. Her post is entitled Cats' and Girls' stuff.... and has 20 some pictures of cute kitties. I posted a comment:

This is a very popular image, there are at least 5 active hotlinks. Three of them are on soccer forums in .uk, another on a Dutch langauge social forum, and, um, somewhere else.

It's usually an illustration of a bad date. Ugh.

An Enlightened Display of a Jumping Spider

Take It As Red is an interesting blog. Unfortunately the proprietor seems to have caught some dread disease and hasn't posted since 2 Nov 2005. I hope they're ok.

And, on top of that, I don't want you to verge from Enlightened to Blogisattva by not blogging anymore!

There're a number of Ceph Blogging posts, then a bit of a random selection of items, and a sad story. People keep visiting now and then, the photo has been fetched 18 times since the beginning of the month.

And one of my photos is featured as a post, with appropriate attribution. It's one of my favorites. This is a jumping spider eating a little flower spider. I had been trying to get some shots of the flower spider, gone away for a few minutes, and when I returned I found this scene.

BREAKING! MySpace Hotlink in Progresse

Someone is running this image through a MySpace editor function of some sort. The URL is such that only that person can make use of it, when I plug it in I get redirected to the login page. I should login.

Now that URL gets me to my own editor. That's good, I shouldn't be able to edit someone else's page. That assures me that the person whose profile contains my image is the one who put it there.

Updates as appropriate.

UPDATE 21 Dec 2005: There has been no further activity with this picture. They must have decided it wasn't the right image for their profile page. Or perhaps they just aren't anyone's friend. Who knows.

A Google Search for "keep from hotlinking on myspace"

The Hotlinking the Vegetable About file was just accessed via this search. (hmm, the about file is on the first page, that's a bit surprising as it's only been around a few days.)

I'd be curious if eventually they discover something. The solution provided by A List Apart is pretty good if you have the access and technical skill. Mostly access, he walks you through what to do. So perhaps reading the about file will be helpful.

This all seems very strange. I support the rights of a creater, but seriously, how can anyone expect that their way cool picture isn't going to end up bouncing around the net. Yes, it's best if attribution is given, but people simply don't understand what they're doing, and/or they don't really care. It won't change anytime soon, indeed, it will become more pervasive.

Putting a cool picture on the web seems like an attractive nuisance. An attractive pleasure, if you will.

I'll have to read through that google search, see if I can glean any bits of wisdom from among the dross.

Hotlinks from MySpace.com

There have been five hotlinks coming from MySpace.com. Three of them have been part of a profile page, and the other two in the list of friends comments. I've been unable to contact any of them, as far as I know. I haven't heard back.

I will describe the latest four. First up is an old friend.

This picture is on THE FA11EN TM's profile page. Apparently, he's a 21 year old male from Soledad, California. He started using this image on 23 Oct 2005 and it's been on his page ever since. I tried messaging to no avail - I will again eventually.

This picture certainly appeals to quite a range of people, from Mr. FA11EN TM to Miss ForgetfullyPink.

This orange rose was on Brittani's profile page for two days earlier this month, the 7th and 8th of Decemeber 2005. She's using a snowflake pattern now. I tried to contact her, maybe she got spooked. Anyway, thank you Brittani for using my picture for a few days!

Sabaki and my foot are in the friends comments on melody's profile page. The picture was included in a comment by Jess, who hails from the interestingly named Smithsoniantonville, Alabama. Is this for real? I think not, but it's cool! Points for wonkish creativity!

I had despaired of contacting people here by the time this showed up. It was posted on the 15th of December 2005, and I continue to serve the image up.

I photographed this snake at the trailhead of the Woodpecker Loop Trail at the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge. It appeared in the friends comments of Mr. White's profile page, and in a particularly cool way. From 10 Nov 2005 to 6 Dec 2005 it was part of a slideshow which scroll a whole bunch of gopher pictures, and then the gopher snake. By the time I saw it, the effect was spoiled by the picture immediately preceding it having a "HEY! THIS IS MINE!" notice, and a few more strident sentences whose precise nature I have forgotten.

This is one reason it's okay with me for the picture to be sans credit: it would have spoiled the effect. I seem to recall that Katrin! was the friend commenting. Wow! Katrin! has a very nice flower spider picture as her back ground. I should point her at my Spiders archive.

And thanks! whoever it was that created the slideshow, very cool hotlink.

I realised I needed to have a hotlink policy, akin to shrinkwrap licenses. I've looked around some, but I can't find anything that describes what I want.

This is a collection of shrinkwrap language that various places use.

Until I can get someone with legal training to craft some language, this what I will use:

By hotlinking to an image on Middle-Fork, Far Cartouche, or Hotlinking the Vegetable:

1) You have purchased the image for the limited use in the specific context of the hotlink;

2) I have your permission to attempt to contact you within the context of the hotlink to communicate the terms of this contract;
3) I retain my copyright in all other cases - specifically:

You do not have permission to host the image from another location.
